Analysis of Power Sector in India: A Structural Perspective

    Get PDF
The inhibitors to growth in power sector were many—small and big but the main roadblock in the growth path was Government Policy, which made it difficult or rather impossible for a private player to enter. This further aggravated the problem that Indian entrepreneurs didn’t have enough knowledge and experience in developing power projects. To worsen the scenario, the SEBs and other Government Agencies became financially weak to propel any future expansion or growth in the sector. Electricity Act, 2003 was a major step in solving the above underlying problems of the power sector. A whole new system was evolved where private players were invited to be an active participant. The system demanded financial, political and other infrastructural growth—with major requirement in roads and communication. Some of the bold steps taken in the Act were moving generation and distribution out of ‘License Raj’ regime, opening access to national grid and demolishing the ‘Single Buyer’ model. The failure of the huge federal structure and the changing global scenario have forced Government to think of ways to revive this fundamental infrastructure sector. Two of the avenues that government can count on for future growth of this sector is “Midgets or Small Power Plants” and “CDM—Clean Development Mechanism” .Power Sector , India

Debating Gender Discrimination and Violence in Githa Hariharan's The Thousand Faces of Night

    Get PDF
Githa Hariharan belongs to the new generation of Indian writers who have earned greater visibility and readership for Indian English Literature. As a writer she is preoccupied with human condition which to her is the pre-requisite and the essence of creative writing in general and of literature in particular. Apparently, she chooses a small space for almost all her novels but endeavors to enlarge the limited space to such an extent that it becomes an elaborate presentation of human condition. Hariharan believes in inclusiveness, which extends and broadens an individual's social horizon. She thinks that writers have a socio‑political responsibility as well. They are not rarefied creatures, above or at a tangent from the world around. In her view, it is completely ridiculous to expect writers to be uninvolved. Writers are citizens like everyone else and they should be socially and politically engaged, they have a special responsibility to discharge—to reveal truths that are fundamentally related to human condition. Like almost all distinguished writers of Indian English Literature, Hariharan too is aware of the controversy concerning the writing in English and writing in Indian languages. Speaking about the ticklish issue of 'authenticity' in Indian English Literature in general and in her own writing in particular, she does not conceal her mixed feelings of indignation and disgust. Hariharan thinks that within India the official line on representation seems too often get reduced to writing in English versus other Indian languages

Abdul Kalam, one of the most remarkable leaders of contemporary India, remained an extremely popular public figure, as long as he remained alive, but even after his demise, he remained a guiding star to many a strayed boats. He had 1.8 million people following him on Facebook and used to receive about 300 emails every day. His active and visible presence on the social media provided a unique opportunity to engage with his readers in a way that has never done before. His books provide insights into the issues which concerns and engage the minds of young Indians. The wide spectrum of issues reflected in these books are like the colours of the rainbow, each one different from the other, but all emanating from one light. Through his books, he wanted to keep alive the lights in the minds and souls of our youth, and inspire them to reach great heights of achievement. Reflecting upon a wide range of themes of abiding human, national and global concerns, Dr. Kalam's inspiring, and magical words engage and captivate the listener's mind and heart. He uses simple words directly from the heart to air out his opinion on wide range of themes, concerning both national and global. It is remarkable that how, APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, continues to be such a popular public figure even years demitting office. Much sought, much admired, he is an inspiration for the youth and they usually turn to him for advice, guidance, and solace or just simply to be in touch with him, as long as he remained alive. The mentoring, the directions, the solutions he provides are all based on the wisdom of his experience, as he knows well the trials and tribulations of the hard rocky road of life that he has walked from Rameswaram to the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Reflecting on the challenges of personal growth which each one of us faces in our daily lives to the more complex issues confronting us as a society and as a nation, his books provides a roadmap for living an inspired and purposeful life

Background: To evaluate the effectiveness of regime of thromboprophylaxis including soluble aspirin, pneumatic compression devices and early mobilization in prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) with patients of proximal femoral fracture managed by internal fixation. Methods: The study was an observational study conducted at tertiary care hospital of Indian armed forces with sample size of n= 50, diagnosed case of fracture proximal femur and managed operatively with soluble aspirin and pneumatic compression devices and early mobilization. Patients were observed and evaluated periodically for 12 weeks post discharge with colour doppler assessment. Results: The findings at end of 2 Week, n=1 (2%, p<0.003) had findings suggested of DVT and n=49 (98%) had no signs of DVT. Next periodic evaluation at 6 weeks and 12 weeks n=50 (100% p<0.001) was devoid of any doppler findings suggestive of DVT.Conclusions: The observational prospective study demonstrated the triad of soluble aspirin, pneumatic compression and early mobilization were efficacious in prevention of DVT in surgically managed cases of fracture proximal femur

The pattern of metal matrix composites can be enhanced by integrating the concept of hybrid metal matrix composite to produce newer engineering materials with improved properties. The morphological and mechanical characteristics of Al-4032/SiC/GP hybrid composites have been investigated. The aluminium alloy (Al-4032) based hybrid composites have been fabricated through the bottom pouring stir casting set up, by reinforcing the silicon carbide (SiC) and granite powder ceramic particles as the reinforcement material at various fraction levels i.e. 0, 3, 6, 9 weight% in equal proportion. The reinforcement particle size is up to 54ÎŒm. The microstructural characterization of the hybrid composite samples has been carried out using an optical microscope, SEM, and XRD. The study reveals that the reinforcement hybrid particles (SiC + GP) are almost uniformly distributed throughout the matrix phase. The mechanical properties (tensile strength, impact strength, and microhardness) of the hybrid composite samples have been obtained and found to be better than the unreinforced alloy.

Comparison of erosion performance of uncladded and WC-based laser cladded SS304 and SS410 steels

Myriad hydro materials have been encountered with the severe attacks of eroded particles during the operation, leading to degradation of target material and economic loss. In this study, Colmonoy-6+WC powders were deposited with the help of the laser cladding method on the bare SS304 and SS410 steel surfaces. Distinct properties of cladded surfaces, such as mechanical as well as metallurgical properties, were investigated. The influence of slurry erosion parameters like angle of impact and impact velocity of eroded particles on the cladded as well as uncladded steel specimen was analysed. Under all slurry erosion conditions, there was an escalation in slurry erosion resistance in the case of cladded steel as that of as-received steel specimens. In slurry erosion, the influence of the impact velocity of erodent particles is more against the impact angle. The scanning electron microscopy images of eroded uncoated steel specimens represent ductile behaviour along with the formation lip, ploughing etc., while eroded cladded steels exhibit brittle behaviour

A Study of Alienation in the Novels of Bapsi Sidhwa and Rohinton Mistry

Bapsi Sidhwa and Rohinton Mistry are diasporic award winning Pakistani and Indian novelists respectively. Both of the writers have migrated to foreign countries; Bapsi Sidhwa to America and Rohinton Mistry to Canada. Bapsi Sidhwa was born in Karachi in 1939 which was then in undivided India while Rohinton Mistry was born in Bombay on July 3, 1952 after Independence of India. Both the writers mentioned here, are Parsis and their community made India its home some centuries ago after the Arab invasion on Persia (Iran). According to Jagdish Batra, “Their exodus to India started after a century or so. The documentary evidence speaks of a stream of migrants from 785 to 1021 A.D. However, trade and cultural relations between India and Persian Empire existed since, at least, the third century A.D. According to Kissa-I Sanjan written in Persian by Dastur Sanjana, the migrating Parsis were received by the king of a coastal region in Gujarat- Jadhav Rana, who gave them permission to settle down on certain conditions.” (Rohinton Mistry: Identities, Values and Other Sociological Concerns 34) They can be said to lead a life of up rootedness from their original roots. But the migration of Bapsi Sidhwa and Rohinton Mistry to foreign lands is tantamount to their ‘doubly displaced’ status. As the Parsis were forced into exile by the Islamic conquest of Persia, both-Bapsi Sidhwa and Rohinton Mistry’s are in Diaspora even in India as their ancestors were also included the lot of the exiled Parsis. It is for this reason that their writings are replete with the experience of double displacement. The present paper intends to find out the phenomenon of this feeling of search for their lost home and also tries to find out to which extent these elements of alienation and marginality are present in their novels with special reference to The Bride, An American Brat and The Crow Eaters of Bapsi Sidhwa and A Fine Balance,, Family Matters and Such a Long Journey of Rohinton Mistry
